There is a void in our hearts which nothing on earth is able to fill. God alone can fill it for He is the beginning and the end of our immortal being. The possession of God fills this void and makes us happy, but the privation of God leaves this void in us and causes us great misery. Unless we have "an upright soul” we will be deceived by a vain imaginary happiness in the things of this temporal life. Now, we do not realize it but in the life to come the soul will be separated from the body and experience an intense longing to see God and to be united with Him. The disappointment of this causes it to suffer a pain in a manner infinite. This is why we must resolve here and now to renounce all designs of our own making in order to seek God and to seek God only. To this end, we must remain intent upon those things which will bring us to the Divine likeness. For if a man’s heart is not so fixed on the remembrance of God, the fear of God and the love of God, many things will happen whereby he will stray from God and sin mortally. Only those who devote themselves to a life of holiness will be delivered from the evils inherent in this world. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me a sinner. Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be! Amen.
